Affordable Brushes March 12, 2008

Haven’t blogged in a couple days as my mind hasn’t been very focused on makeup lately. However, a couple nights ago I saw a great video by Koren of EnKoreMakeup over at YouTube about affordable makeup brushes.

These brushes look super amazing. I went to the site and they have even more that weren’t featured in the video. I haven’t tried any of these yet, but I’m excited to buy some in the future. Not sure how soon that will be, though, my personal computer broke (I’ve been using the family laptop) and pretty much all my money will go to a new computer for the next month or two. But that’s life, lol.

Anyway, I’ve also heard that H&M has brushes that are really inexpensive, but very soft and of high quality. I’ve been wanting to go and look into this but I haven’t had the chance to do this either. =( Hopefully soon.

New Stuff! March 4, 2008

Two new addition to the site have been made. I now am an Amazon.com associate and I created a store with them. You can find the link on the right side of my blog in the “Pages” section. In my store I have lots of beauty items, both high and low end. I’ll be adding new items frequently so check back often.

The second new thing is a section of my favorite Mathieu Francis (SHOUT-OUT) quotes. He never fails to crack me up (or even reduce me to tears laughing!) in his videos. I love his humor. So be sure to check out that page as well, and often, as I will be frequently updating it.

I’m also thinking of redoing the site and giving it a new look … Not sure if I have the time at the moment though, but it is a possibility. 🙂

I’m Back! March 2, 2008

I completely abandoned this site and for that I am sorry. Uhg. I shouldn’t start things before I figure out how to incorporate them into my life, lol. But anyhow, I’m back and hope to start creating better content for the blog. I’ve gained a lot more knowledge since this site began which is a very good thing – I didn’t know very much about makeup in the beginning. >_< I knew only that I liked it and wanted to learn more … BUT, like I said, I’ve been learning and I’ve got some new products that I’ve been experimenting with (such as Everyday Minerals, Pure Luxe Cosmetics, Alima Minerals, and NYX – reviews/tuts coming soon, BTW!) and have come a long, looooong way. Don’t get me wrong, I am far from knowing everything (FAR!!), but I feel like I am now more at an intermediate stage rather than being so beginner. If that makes sense …

Anyway, I was completely blown away when I checked this site today to find that it had recieved 4,000+ hits. I still feel shocked. I realized this is something I should try to keep up even if I can’t spend 10 hours a day on it.

I’m also going to start up the YouTube videos again. It took me a little while to get over my camera shyness (I have to thank ExpoTV.com for that!), which was really weird, by the way. The last thing I expected from myself was camera shyness. I’ve grown up with a video camera in my face and my mom and my aunt and both my grandmas take pictures like crazy – I’m no stranger to the camera. But to get in front of it, put on makeup, and then post it on YouTube totally freaked me out at first.

But yeah, I think I have rambled on long enough now. 😉

Want Some MAC?

I mentioned in my Fall Look tutorial that incorporating some high-end makeup into your collection can bring your low-end things up to a higher level. It doesn’t take much, just a few products, and you can look like a million bucks without braking the bank. Here are a few items from MAC that I suggest you buy to use along with your other cosmetics.

1. Get something you can use as a base for all your eyeshadow – this can be a paint, paint pot, shade stick, cream color base, or prep & prime. Pick something that you like the texture of and choose a shade that is close to your skin tone.

2. Pick two or three eye shadows that you can use on a regular basis and that work well with other shadows you already have in your collection. Don’t pick anything that, while it looks pretty in the pot, you would only use once in a great while. I suggest getting one that is white/off white/cream to use as a highlighter, but the rest can be whatever you choose.

3. Studio Finish Concealer.

4. Lipstick or gloss. Pick a color that is flattering to your skin tone, comes in just the right finish, and works well with your other makeup colors. You could also get a clear gloss to add over the lipsticks you already own.

I don’t recommend buying mascara from MAC (or anywhere high-end) if you’re on a budget because you have to replace it so often. Mascara needs to be replaced every 2 – 3 months because of bacteria and yes, even eye mites (soooo gross!!). If your mascara stings your eyes or is three months old, it’s time to toss it.

I suggest using a permanent marker to write the date you opened your mascara somewhere on the tube so that you can know for sure how old it is.

I recommend N.Y.C. mascara – it’s $2 for thickening, lengthening, or waterproof mascara and $3 for curling. You just don’t want to pay more than that because of having to replace it sooo often. Also, I’ve heard that drugstore brands actually work better than many high-end brands!

So there you go. I hope you have fun picking out your products. Please note that I can’t advise you on your skin tone/what looks good with your tone. It just doesn’t work over the computer. The best thing to do is go to a MAC counter and try out swatches to see for yourself, or, if you’re really unsure, just ask someone who works there. They are more than willing to help you out. =)

Lead in Lipstick October 12, 2007

Some information coming out is that a lot of lipsticks, including luxury brands have a high amount of lead in them. In fact, some of the luxury brands had more lead than the drugstore brands.

Since I don’t understand all the aspects of parts per million and don’t know how much lead is absorbed through the lips (or how much lipstick is ingested for that matter), I don’t know how serious this is.

All of the lipsticks tested were a red color. This could mean that there is something particular about pigments/dies that are red being contaminated with lead and that other colors are fine, I don’t know.

Anyway, here is a complete list of the lipsticks tested.

If you feel strongly about this, please stop buying products from these companies and write to them and tell them why. They don’t seem to be very concerned about it – but, as we all know, money is the only language a lot of businesses speak …

Here are links to contact some of the brands that had the highest level of lead in their lipsticks:

Maybelline

Cover Girl

L’Oreal

Also be sure and visit the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics where you can get more info on how to take action!
