Lead in Lipstick October 12, 2007

Some information coming out is that a lot of lipsticks, including luxury brands have a high amount of lead in them. In fact, some of the luxury brands had more lead than the drugstore brands.

Since I don’t understand all the aspects of parts per million and don’t know how much lead is absorbed through the lips (or how much lipstick is ingested for that matter), I don’t know how serious this is.

All of the lipsticks tested were a red color. This could mean that there is something particular about pigments/dies that are red being contaminated with lead and that other colors are fine, I don’t know.

Anyway, here is a complete list of the lipsticks tested.

If you feel strongly about this, please stop buying products from these companies and write to them and tell them why. They don’t seem to be very concerned about it – but, as we all know, money is the only language a lot of businesses speak …

Here are links to contact some of the brands that had the highest level of lead in their lipsticks:

Maybelline

Cover Girl

L’Oreal

Oh NO! I can’t believe M.A.C is on that list! It’s only that one colour though, right?

Geez, is nothing safe anymore? I read this on some blog about a week ago, but they only mentioned a few brands.

  2. First, kids dying from lead in toys. Now, they find high levels of lead in lipsticks. What’s next – lead in food? Are women going to start dying now too from using lipstick too much?

    Freaky!

There’s a detailed report about it at http://www.myproductalert.com/lead-in-lipsticks.html
